Health House Focuses on Indoor Air Quality Improvement
Newest Demonstration includes Filtration, Ventilation and Central Vacuum

RICHFIELD, Minn. – July 12, 2004—What once was the site of an abandoned home in a suburban Minneapolis neighborhood now serves as a national model for healthier living. The American Lung Association’s newest Health HouseTM showcases building practices and products that are designed to prevent or eliminate contaminants that can make people sick.

The Health House, which opened for tours and seminars during May and soon will be sold, features such technologies as energy recovery ventilation system, a whole-house air filtration system and a built-in central vacuum system. Also featured are building practices that prevent moisture and mold from seeping into the home’s foundation, walls and roof.

The ALA requires central vacuum systems to enhance indoor air quality in Health House demonstration sites that include carpet. The requirement stems from a recent University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, study of allergy patients that proved the use of a Beam Central Vacuum System in place of a conventional vacuum relieves symptoms by 46 percent to 61. Beam Central Vacuum Systems have been installed in ALA Health Houses since 1992.

“As far as indoor air quality, especially since we vented it outside, the contributions of a central vacuum system to healthy indoor air will be substantial,” said Richard Klimala, the builder of the Richfield Health House.
